Here’s a Breakdown of the True and False Lyrics on Remy Ma’s “ShETHER” Diss
Remy Ma sent fans into an essence of hip-hop-induced state of euphoria when she unleashed “ShETHER,” a seven-minute tour de force of savagery directed at Nicki Minaj, the rap game’s preeminent FemCee. Remy didn’t come at Nicki’s neck so much as she brought The Pinkprint artist to the town square for a public execution.
Rapping over Nas’ classic, Ron Browz-produced “Ether” instrumental, Remy laid bare just about all of Nicki’s suspected closet-dwelling skeletons for the world to see. Remy’s bars were skillful, but just as importantly, they were ruthlessly invasive.
In one sequence, the Bronx thoroughbred accuses the Young Money songstress of cheating on one of her ex-boyfriends with Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden. In another, Remy claims Nicki’s reckless pillow talk started her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill’s Drake beef. On top of those, Remy even questions Nicki’s pen game, insinuating that she’s just a groupie who uses Lil Wayne and Drizzy to write her lyrics. Yikes.
Remy’s bars are definitely disrespectful and they’re unquestionably pretty fire, but the question is, how many of them are truthful? In classic rap battles, lyrics are made all the more impactful when they’re in close proximity to the facts.
On “Back to Back,” when Drake rapped, “I don’t want to hear about this ever again/Not even when she tell ’em that they’re better as friends,” the lyrics stung a bit more because of the virtual inevitablity of Meek and Nicki one day breaking up. On “Takeover,” Jay Z’s mentioning of Nas’s track record of lackluster albums after Illmatic resonated because a lot of people hated the Stillmatic MC’s work following his first album.
Based on hip-hop’s reaction to Remy’s Nicki diss song, you’d have to guess the “Lean Back” performer was speaking some truth. But for the most part, there’s no telling who’s spitting the truth or what are lies because some of those claims seem pretty damn outrageous, so it leads us to ask some questions.
Does Remy have some sort of mysterious plug in the underground that would tip her off to Nicki’s alleged ghostwriting? Did Nicki cause Meek Mill’s beef with Drizzy, or was it simply a case of a fragile rapper’s ego? Did Nicki get butt-implants? Offhand, it’s hard to say for sure, but we’re going to give it a try.
XXL takes a look at this beef and puts Remy Ma’s “ShETHER” to the ultimate Internet lie detector test. You can find out just how the truthful Remy’s most shocking disses are in the list below.
1. Remy Accuses Nicki of Stealing Her Lyrics

Toward the beginning of “ShETHER,” Remy throws the first bit of what ends up being a mountain’s worth of shade by accusing Nicki Minaj of stealing a lyric she tweeted from behind bars. In the verse Remy raps, “Let’s be honest, you stole that line ’bout bitches bein’ your sons–how you take my ’09 jail tweet and run?”
The lyric Remy references is from Nicki’s single “Did It On ‘Em,” one of Nicki’s more famous bars from her debut album. On that song Nicki spits, “All these bitches is my sons/And I’mma go and get some bibs for ’em.”
While it’s worth noting that rap lyrics are often referenced or interpolated to give shout-outs to other rappers, Remy hadn’t even put her jail lyrics on a track, so no one would’ve gotten Nicki’s reference, and so therefore, they wouldn’t have been able to appreciate it either. With that in mind, we have to ring up this accusation as true–even if it’s a common offense in the rap game.
2. Remy Believes Nicki Has an Intricate Record Deal
True
Remy went the Pusha T route (remember “Exodus 23:1″) toward the end of “ShETHER,” making the claim that Nicki has to give the majority of the money she makes from rapping to the record labels she signed with year’s ago.
On the track, Remy raps, “And stop talkin’ numbers, you signed a 360 deal/Through Young Money, through Cash Money, through Republic/Which means your money go through five niggas before you touch it/Any videos, promotions come out of your budget/Endorsements, tour and merchandise, they finger-fuck it/You make, like, 35 cents off of each ducat.”
While we can’t say how accurate Remy’s 35 cents for every dollar claim actually is, we do know that record labels do take significant portions out of their artist’s pockets after said artist signs a 360 deal. With that in mind, specifics aside, these particular Remy lyrics ring true.
To Be Determined Nicki Minaj is probably as famous for her backside as she is for her music, but she doesn’t speak too much on how it ever came to be the size it is today. With that said, plenty of folks have speculated that she’s received butt implants, and Remy is one of them.
On “ShETHER,” Remy raps that Nicki’s ex Meek Mill met with her at the 2017 NBA All -Star weekend festivities and said that Nicki’s butt shots once exploded and that he couldn’t have sex with her for three months. Apparently, that story is what led Remy to lay into Nicki for being a bad girlfriend.

There’s really no way of confirming or discounting the rumors about Nicki’s butt implants or her sexual habits with Meek Mill, but looking at pictures of Nicki before and after fame, it’s hard not to wonder about whether or not she has implants in her backside. We’ll say this one is to be determined.
4. Remy Thinks Nicki Turned Her Back False
In this lyric, Remy claims Nicki turned her back on Remy after supporting her while she was still in prison. You can hear Nicki giving Remy a shout out in the “ShETHER” intro.
In the verse, Remy raps, “You was screamin’ ‘Free Remy!’ when I was upstate doomed/But now that they freed Remy, you don’t sing the same tune.”
While Nicki didn’t outright diss Remy, she did throw some sharp subliminals her way with verses on “Swalla and Make Love.” Even if Nicki never comes out and says these verses were about Remy, it’s sort of hard to see how it could be any other way. Remy is a Grammy-nominated rapper, and her song with Fat Joe–“All the Way Up”– was everywhere in 2016. Nicki saying she wasn’t dissing Remy would be–at least in the context of current, Grammy-nominated FemCee’s– sort of like Coca-Cola making a commercial dissing “other” commercial brands of cola and trying to say they weren’t talking about Pepsi.
With that said, the same idea roughly applies to Remy as well, and it’s hard to imagine she wasn’t at least thinking about Nicki in some of her previous freestyles folks believe contained subliminal shots at Nicki. Remy and Nicki have been going back-and-forth for years now, so it’s hard to say any one of them turned their back on the other when they were never facing each other in the first place. This one is entirely subjective. We’ll label this one false.
Now this one definitely raised more than a few eyebrows. Toward the middle of “ShETHER,” Remy claims that Nicki cheated on an unnamed boyfriend with Hot 97 radio personality Ebro Darden.
“Coke head, you cheated on your man with Ebro/I might leak the footage of you sniffing them ski slopes/They gassing you up, but you been on E, though/’Pills and Potions,’ yep, you been on E, hoe,” Remy raps.
It’s unclear which “man” Remy is referring to, although it could be Safaree or Meek, but Ebro vehemently denied the claims just a few days after his name popped up in Remy’s incendiary diss record. We’re going to call this one a big fat false.
